BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – (August 27th, 2021) The National Housing Corporation (NHC) held its first Open House Day at the Wellington Road Complex on Friday 27th, August 2021. This event was a highlight for persons as it previewed the aesthetics of a furnished unit, as well as, fostered decorative ideas for comfortable spaces. Persons of the community, potential homeowners, members of Cabinet and Board members and staff at the NHC, were in admiration at the décor of the 2-bedroom unit. In addition to the viewing, the media also received an outlook of the development.
Among the contingent at today’s Open House were Prime Minister of the Federation, the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris, Deputy Prime Minister – the Hon. Shawn Richards, Hon. Eugene Hamilton – Minister of human Settlement, et al, Minister of Labour, et al – Hon. Wendy Phipps, Ms. Brenda Boncamper – Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Human Settlement, Mr. Valentine Lindsay – Special Adviser to the Minister of Human Settlement, Mrs. Malvie James – Chairperson at NHC, and Ms. Melisa Edwards Boutin – General Manager at NHC.
The Wellington Road Complex is designed with four (4) buildings in this first phase of the development, having 6 units in each building consisting of the living/ dining area, 2 bedrooms, kitchen, laundry, washroom and patio. Additionally, all units on the upper levels are equipped with fire escapes.
According to the Hon. Eugene Hamilton, twenty-four (24) families will be elated when these new homes are allocated to them. The persons receiving these homes are well-deserving and will not have to wait much longer before receiving their keys. NHC will be handing over the keys to the owners during a ceremony that is tentatively scheduled for September 10th. He also gave a brief history of the project and noted that a phase II will begin shortly where more families will be accommodated.
Hon. Shawn Richards was very pleased with the end product of the completion of the four buildings at Wellington Road and was happy to see that the homes are fit for kings and queens. Some families’ dreams are finally coming true and nothing makes him more proud than to see persons from the community receiving these redesigned models where the space is light and airy; a different atmosphere from the previous buildings.
The Hon. Prime Minister, Dr. Timothy Harris stated that although there are only 24 units in the first phase, opportunities will arise in a second and third phase for persons to capitalize on. The Prime Minister also encouraged younger persons to start saving towards home ownership to make the process easier.
Ms. Melisa Edwards Boutin gave words of encouragement to the prospective homeowners and highlighted some planning tips to house-hunters applying through NHC and other financial institutions.
